PostSubject: Mass Effect love page (warning, will contain spoilers)   Fri Aug 26, 2011 1:23 pm

So, the first game I got for my 360 was Mass Effect 2 after reading a bit on it at IGN and after playing it with no prior knowledge of the first game, I loved it! I know I've touched on this in other topic so I'll keep it short but ME2 is fantastic. The fact that decisions in the game actually have an affect on the outcome of the final mission and the next game and the diversity of characters and intricate backstory and aaaaaaaaaaaaahh...just play the demo at least.

And for anyone else that's played this, a started question: What class did you choose and why?

Alright Gremlin, I'm sorry no one has replied to this page, but I think that Mass Effect is officially the next game I'm going to embark upon, since I've just about reached 100% in Final Fantasy XIII. Everyone raves about this game, so I think it's the the best step to take next...

You mentioned classes...which did you pick? Should I be mindful of that? Any tips for a newcomer??

I haven't really played that far into ME1; as far as the first vehicle section, where it became impossible to control comfortably. Still, I won't deny that it's a universe worth losing yourself in.

Cory, as far as your query on classes is concerned, there's really not much to advise a newcomer on that can't be picked up by the game's text informing you of it. That's about how I learned everything when I started earlier this year. I don't think anyone who's really into the games can explain any of the beginner stuff anymore without overcomplicating it, so it's worth your time to just start the game and let things happen as they happen.

Well guys, I've officially started the game, and I think Gremlin's right...this game is incredibly intricate and complex as far as the overall world and characters go...and I just left the Citadel! I really am enjoying it so far, even though I think Commander Shephard is a bit on the bland side.

Oh, and I picked the class that's a mix between combat and biotic...can't think of the name of it right now.

Alright, as I already posted, I just beat Mass Effect as a Vanguard. I want to talk about the ending, so hurry up and beat it so we can all play ME2!!

…What? Did you skip every sidequest in the game? I still just can't bring myself to make it past the current sequence I'm at.

I did some of the sidequests but not nearly enough of them. I had no idea the game was going to end at a particular mission, so I couldn't go back and do them. I'm currently replaying the game as a female version of Shepard and making different choices to see the different outcomes. It's interesting to see how differently everything will play out, especially when I carry on both profiles in ME2 and 3.

Sorry for not being on here when you were asking questions before. Basically, my understanding of the classes from my experience only:
Vanguard (what cory was first time): uses biotics to get incapacitate the enemy then gets up close and personal to destroy him with a shotgun. A class for those who play in close combat scenarios.
Infiltrator: the total opposite, stays a good deal away from the heat of the battle and picks the enemies off with a sniper while sending his squadmates forward and covering them. my preferred class.
Adept: A support class as he can only specialise in pistols. Uses lift and singularity to create easy targets for the squadmates and throw for offensive tactics (very useful for charging krogan and geth destroyers)

Haven't played with Soldier, Engineer or Sentinel so I can't make valid decisions on them but it seems the Soldier is basically a bullet sponge capable of specialising in every weapon, they also have health regen. which is very cool.

I tried to complete every sidequest in the game and managed to apart from one (same reason as cory, couldn't return to the Citadel so couldn't activate it) and though Bioware only use two level designs for most of them, they are great fun and rather compelling. The sidequests in ME2 are MUCH more varied thankfully.

I'm playing as an infiltrator now, and I agree that it is a better class. It's actually even better since I get a shotgun bonus for beating the game once as the Vanguard.

Also, I'm really glad I'm replaying, as there was SO much I skipped over in my first playthrough. I guess I was just so compelled by the story that I rushed it thinking I could go back. I think I like my female Shephard more than my original, she's more of a renegade (though she's still ultimately a paragon), and I'm currently in a love triangle with Liara and Alenko...I don't know which one I should choose! lol I also (SPOILER) killed Alenko in my first playthrough, so it stands to reason I should kill Ashley this time around...but then again, I'm in that love triangle... scratch

It's actually because you got 150 kills with the shotgun that you can use it for any class.

Yeah, I'm planning on replaying it as a female renegade Shepard but I'm going to go Soldier I think.
As for your love triangle, eventually they both confront you together and you are forced to choose.

Also, in ME2, each class gets a unique skill from the start (so it's not a spoiler). The Infiltrator's is an invisibility cloak, the Vanguard's is a biotic charge that flies across the field (through solid objects!) towards an enemy and Adepts get Singularity which is the greatest biotic mover ever. Seriously get Liara on your team and put points into it in ME1!

EDIT: and what do people think of the multiplayer? Personally, I can't wait to play as a turian or krogan (or even a hanar/elcor Very Happy ). Though I'm a bit concerned when they say that doing multiplayer actually helps give you the best single player ending...

Ah man, you mean I can't cheat on both of them on the same time? Well isn't that a shame? Who to pick??? I already killed Ashley once, maybe I should just dump Kaidan and kill him...I'm nearing Virmire again, so little time to think!

Ah, so that's why I have the shotgun! That makes sense. Overall, I'm enjoying the infiltrator class more. I'm surprised you're going with the Soldier class, I don't think the Assault Rifle and Heavy Armor outweigh the benefits of the other hybrid, but hey, it's your game.

As for multiplayer, I have mixed feelings. Could be really good...and hell, you and I would be able to play together!

By the way, what did you do at the ending? Save the Council or focus on Sovereign?

I chose Soldier because I wanted access to all the weapons and there's also health regeneration which is very helpful. I put the difficulty up to Veteran so I figured this would help somewhat. Also, I haven't tried this class and the other two combat classes I have.

I'm quite excited for multiplayer, I guess we'll just have to wait till more info comes out on it.

As I was Paragon, I decided that at the end I would save the Council. For my renegade playthrough I don't plan on doing so though. Also I was so fully paragon by the end that I managed to convince Saren to kill himself so I only fought his weird reincarnation form. Did you fight him?

Well, health regen is a good reason, although there is the med interface for that (even though it's not quite as good). Btw, thanks for giving me the link to the Mass Effect Wiki. It definitely helped with some of my questions, especially with first aid, which I was confused about since I thought it was a biotic ability like Barrier or immunity.

I was a true paragon in my first playthrough, I saved the council and convinced Saren to kill himself. I actually felt bad for Saren in a way, it seemed like he was doing what he thought was right until the end. And his reincarnation was just his cybernetic parts which Sovereign implanted him with, apparently.

And I agree about multiplayer. A lot of people are in an uproar over it, which I think isn't really necessary. Judging from what I've seen, I don't buy into the idea that the single player will be weaker because they chose to devote time to multiplayer. And I do think that multiplayer affecting the main game is a neat idea, especially since you'll be fighting in wars taking place in the main game.

Ah, what the hell...I went with Liara. Nothing like a little cross-species love huh? lol

Btw, Yasser, this is off topic but have you played Fallout 3? If you haven't, you're love for Mass Effect tells me you'd love that game too.

As you said, most people are worried about Bioware spending more time on MP and neglecting the SP campaign which is what Mass Effect is famed for. But I heard that it's a different team designing the MP so I reckon we're safe there. And hey, no-one was looking forward to Assassin Creed's MP and that turned out to be a success.

What if you combine the medical interface with the Soldier's regeneration and bam! you've got about 9 health per sec regen.!

I haven't, there's lots of games I'm planning on getting soon but I'll try to keep an eye out for it.

what do you think of this?

Sorry Gremlin, I've either been busy working or playing Mass Effect Wink ! I finally beat my second play-through of Mass Effect 1 with my Female Shephard, and I'm way more happy with the results. I did most all of the quests, and I was sooooo much stronger than my first game. I killed Saren in like 3 minutes...lol

So, having said that, I'm about an hour into ME 2, and I have to say, it's hard to get used to after spending so much time with ME1! I mean the graphics are amazing and the story is pretty cool so far, but the gameplay feels so different...it's waaaay more shooter oriented and I'm still confused over the weapons usage and how to use squad points. Plus, this doesn't seem like a big deal, but all of the text is soooo tiny I can hardly see it! My eyes actually hurt trying to read it! I'm sure I'll get used to it, but it is a bit of a pain right now!

I think the game leans towards being a shooter more because Bioware wanted the game to be more streamlined so you wouldn't have to keep pausing every so often. That's also why the inventory was taken out. I personally prefer the new system of upgrades/research than having tonnes of different weapons and attachments, much less micro-management.

What don't you get about the weapons usage?

In ME2, the levelling system is different. In ME1 you get xp for killing enemies, finding codex pages, and every other little thing. But in ME2 you only get xp from finishing a mission or assignment. Once you level up (at the start, it's pretty much after every mission) you get points to upgrade yourself and the squad. The squad points screen is massively simplified in ME2; there's much less abilities to put points into. But, next to each power are the numbers 1 to 4. To get to the next rank, you need the number of points as denoted by the number in each box (so 1, then 2, then 3 etc). And when you reach rank 4 you get to choose between two upgraded versions of that power. Does that clear it up? It is a lot different to ME1 and will take time to get used to.

Alright Yasser, thanks for being so patient. I've officially completed Mass Effect 2...and it was freaking AWESOME! You were absolutely right, the weapons and leveling system did take some getting used to, especially since it was pretty different than ME1...having said that though, it was a lot easier to manage your characters and combat was smoother and more fluid. It was nice to not have to micro-manage your armor, power-ups, ammo upgrades and the like, and leveling was a breeze.

You were also right about the side-missions not being nearly as repetitive as ME1. They weren't cut-and-paste missions on boring planets, and you got a chance to get to know a TON of characters in depth. My one complaint would probably be that a few of the loyalty missions were still a bit on the repetitive side, with you basically fighting one of the three mercenary groups over and over again, sometimes for pretty much no reason, like in Jack's mission. Did the mercs really need to be there? Couldn't they have just done a wild pack of Varen or some sort of carnivorous plant? I'm not saying it was bad, I just wish it was switched up a little more, like Thane's mission, which I liked. Still, compared to ME1, it really is a VAST improvement.

What do you think of the ending? Did you side with the Illusive Man? I saw you saved all of your characters. I did as well, though I waited to go through the Omega Relay, so half of my crew died. Sad I definitely sided against him, and loved cutting him off in the last conversation. I knew he was evil, and it makes me wonder what he'll have in store in ME3...maybe he'll join with the Reapers to save humanity like Saren did???

As for multiplayer, I watched an interview with the project director, who said he knew very well that people were scared of multiplayer taking away from single-player, and that he promised that it wouldn't take away from it. He also said that ME3 was delayed so everything could be perfect, and that the game would exceed everyone's expectations.
When it comes down to it, I'm not worried. It's Bioware Montreal, a separate team, so I know the single player will stay amazing. I think all the people who are so worried are overreacting.

Yep, I thought you would prefer the new method. ME2 sides towards a shooter moreso than ME1 to create a more dynamic game during the mission. The only change I have mixed feelings about it is the ammo system. I like the more orthodox thermal clips system because (obviously) it stops the problem of overheating. I think this especially helps with sniper rifles as you can now shoot as soon as you've reloaded instead of waiting for your weapon to cool to a v. low point. However, the overheating system has its advantages too. You can fire with much less thought as you don't need to conserve ammo and I always felt at the end of a fire fight I would spend 2-3 minutes searching around for ammo clips, thereby eliminating the fluidity of ME2.

The mercs were really just a replacement for the geth in ME2, a standard enemy who seem to be employed by absolutely everyone! I actually preferred the loyalty missions to the recruitment and main missions as they revealed so much about each character. Thane's especially - there's no action but it's still very emotional to play through. I actually reloaded the mission the first time because I failed it and Thane's son assassinated the turian politician. I felt bad for Thane and tried again and got it.

As for the suicide mission, the first time I played I lost Mordin and Jack - Jack because she was disloyal (I sided with Miranda in their fight and couldn't get her back afterwards) and Mordin because I didn't leave enough strong and sturdy defenders to hold the line at the base ( Sad ). The second I managed it though, so it'll be interesting to see how ME3 pans out with them missing. I didn't side with the Illusive Man and blew up the base. Interestingly, I had Miranda with me in the final boss battle and the IM tries to get her to do it, they have a wee argument and she resigns!

I thought the ending was spectacular, though the final battle was kinda easy I found. I recently found out that the DLC called 'Arrival' bridges the gap between ME2 and 3 so be sure to play that! Spoilers for ME3:

I'm going to have to agree on the thermal clips. They did grow on me over time (I hated them at first), but it does make more sense in the long run. The only pet peave I had (including our shared irritation at looking for clips), was that the sniper rifles (besides the Viper, I think) only had one shot at a time, while you might eak out 2 or 3 in ME1. Other than that, I wish there were a few more RPG elements in 2...not as many as 1, but I liker having a more rounded character with more abilities.

As for the mercs, I see how they're the Geth replacement, though I do wish we fought the Geth a bit more, since I thought they were great enemies. The mercs lacked personality to me, maybe if they had a more defined goal or a charismatic leader...they just came across as kind of cannon fodder to me.

One thing I did notice was that I missed having a defined enemy. I know the Reapers were of course the main enemy, and Harbinger was the one controlling the Collectors, but I wish they fleshed out Harbinger a bit more. I'm sure they'll do that in ME3, but I miss a strong, present antagonist like Saren, who was a great villain.

Speaking of the IM, I heard talk of his indoctrination too, but I thought it was just speculation. I've looked at his page on the Wiki, and it didn't explicitly say he was indoctrinated.

I was just looking over some articles online and it says there's a live stream of ME3 where Liara says "they [Cerberus] just don't quit, do they?" and Shepard replies "They're indoctrinated!". They specifically say cerberus are indoctrinated and not TIM. Maybe he lost control over the organisation? On the other hand, have you noticed how artificial TIM's eyes look? I just realised that they look awfully similar to Saren's when he was indoctrinated...I honestly cannot wait until January for the demo!

I understand what you mean about the main 'baddie'. I get that you don't really get to face off with the antagonist, like you do with Saren. And that even the final boss is something you have no knowledge about until you meet it. But I believe that that was the idea behind ME2. The whole game is very mysterious what with it revolving around a suicide mission that involves going through a mass relay which leads to space that no-ones ever returned from. To accentuate this, they make the common enemy (mercs) irrelevant to the plot and you only get to see the Collectors three or four times so you can't really get a good idea of them. Also you never get to see a proper Reaper in person (you visit a dead Reaper, battle a Human-Reaper larvae and talk through Collectors with Harbinger) so they have this real sense of secrecy.

Have you downloaded any of the DLC? I have to say, the missions are absolutely spectacular! I have the Cerberus Network and all of its contents (comes with the game), Kasumi - Stealing Memory (introduces one of my favourite teammates and missions) and Lair of the Shadow Broker (great to see Liara again and there's a car chase!) from ME2 and I hope to get Arrival (essential) and Overlord. From ME1 just have the Bring Down the Sky mission and it's surprisingly good for only being 60 or 80MP. OH, and I got the Normandy SR2 cap for my avatar just for lulz

Wow, you really heard that? I kind of expected TIM and Cerberus to be indoctrinated...I actually thought that might pop up as a shocking twist towards the end of ME2! And I've thought about TIM's eyes as well, there's definitely something off about him...it should really be interesting to discover in the next game.

I have played The Lair of the Shadow Broker, which I thought was pretty amazing. It also allowed me to continue my alien love affair with Liara. lol I have Zaeed but I don't have Kasumi...which download pack is she with? Is it free? I didn't even see it. I was thinking of playing Arrival, but the IGN review made it sound pretty basic and almost boring, so I'm not sure if I'll bother. I don't know much about Overlord...

But then again, I'm not really worried about things to do in the ME Universe. I have to go back and replay my male Shephard in ME1, romance Ashley and kill Kaidan, and possibly let the council die (though I'm not sure if I can do that...). Either way, I want two very different scenarios so I'll have two different ME3 playthroughs. Are you doing something similar? Do you have multiple Shephards with different choices?

Btw, I did the exact same thing in Thane's mission. Replayed it twice to save his son! Actually, as it turns out, if Thane's son kills the candidate, you don't get Thane's loyalty. I should also mention I had a heck of a time with Miranda after siding with Jack in their argument. I didn't have enough Paragon points until AFTER I beat the game to get her to stop pouting. And because of that, I couldn't put her in my final party when you fight the larva, since apparently non-loyal members in your team at that point will die.

Oh, and one last thing: what do you think of the Human Larva Reaper? It was pretty easy, but it was also pretty freaky...why do you think the reapers were making something like that??

Kasumi is in the DLC package called 'Kasumi - Stealing Memory'. I think it's 560MP and is definitely worth it. You get Kasumi (who, btw has the greatest ability ever! It's called shadow strike and she basically infiltrator cloaks to an enemy, hits them for massive damage, and cloaks back to cover) and a new SMG which is easily my favourite. The mission's great fun as well, I won't go into details though. Arrival officially bridges the gap between ME2 and ME3 so I think it's pretty necessary to play, I reckon IGN's being too harsh on it. As for Overlord, I don't know too much about it either, other than that it's about a rogue VI...not a priority for me really.

Yeah, I'm at Noveria in a second playthrough on ME1 and playing as a renegade female, I'm going to kill Ashley and romance Liara so keep everything different. Did you know that if you romance someone different in ME2 than in ME1 then there are some kind of ramifications in ME3? I romanced Ashley in my first playthrough and then Tali in ME2 - I don't think Ashley will be too happy about cheating on her with an alien lol! So for my second I'm going to stick with Liara throughout just to be safe.

I was kind of disappointed with the final boss. I thought it was going to be the Collector General who we were going to fight at the end. Instead we get this larva which was surprisingly not too difficult. I managed to get its health down to about half with the Widow sniper and Incinerate and finished it off with heavy pistols and the squad. I guess Harbinger and the Collectors made it more irritating but yeah. Also when you targeted on it, it was called 'Weak Spot'. What's up with that?

We have a lot of conversations going on at the same time, but I wanted to ask, what did you think of heavy weapons? What was your favourite?
